There are three ways of participating in handicapped air racing rather than just being a supporter and spectator :

1) Pilots - Any pilot with a valid licence may compete in air racing provided he or she has at least 100 hours P1 experience. Safety is paramount and pilots must be issued with an FAI competitor’s licence. This is a simple process, the form can be downloaded on line but must be countersigned by a CFI or someone of similar standing to certify that you meet the requirements of 100 hours P1. Before racing you will be asked to fly with a race check pilot who will ensure that you are familiar with race techniques, accurate flying and turning. Many pilots join air racing via the Air Race School, which the Royal Aero Club runs annually typically in March or April. Please check the website for the next Air Race School dates or alternatively the check pilots are able to provide private assistance and there are commercially available short courses for those who can’t make an Air Race School. It is fair to say that anyone with average pilot ability is capable of racing, winning however is a matter of honing those skills.

2) Navigators - While it is not essential to carry a navigator as courses are fairly short, many pilots enjoy the company and camaraderie of having an extra pair of eyes and hands that navigators are able to provide assisting with look-out, turn roll-out coordination and generally staying on the best race line. Navigators do not have to be associated with a particular pilot but frequently pilot/navigator teams turn up to Air Race School and graduate together.

3) Ground volunteers - As may be imagined, air racing requires a high degree of organisation, not only to run the races but to maintain safety. We are always looking for additional ground staff who can be involved in time-keeping, marshals to man the turning points, and a myriad of other tasks.
